Balancing Power Resources with the Environment

Tri-State G&T and its 44 member distribution systems support the cleanest resources possible in the production of its electricity supply, showing commitment to protecting the land and environment that its consumers depend on.

The electricity that Tri-State generates at its coal-fired power plants comes from clean-burning, high-quality, low-sulfur coal. The latest in environmental controls have been installed and are in operation at all its plants, allowing the facilities to meet or exceed federal and state clean-air standards.

The association routinely audits its facilities to determine how well its environmental practices match regulatory requirements. Tri-State has designed its power system to operate and remain environmentally sound, while meeting present and future electricity needs.

Reclamation

In keeping with Tri-State's commitment to a healthy environment, the various surface coal mines supplying the G&T's fuel needs invest in extensive reclamation activities. Wildlife and plant life benefit from these efforts as the sites are returned to similar, or - in many cases - better condition than before excavation.

Trapper, which supplies Craig Station in northwest Colorado , has received several state and national awards for its reclamation efforts. At Trapper, reclaimed lands result in wildlife habitat improvements, steam channel-stabilization, woody-plant establishment and increased livestock-carrying capacity.

Renewable Energy

Since 1998, Tri-State has offered green power as part of its available resources to its member systems. To learn more about the association's program, visit its Renewable Energy Web site.
